PhD Position: Edge-enabled distributed machine learning with multi-modal data
Project Description: This project will investigate how distributed small-scale machine learning models can advance decentralised decision-making in complex systems with
delay sensitivity. The computing power associated with IoT devices will be used to enable
computing closer to the edge of the network. Distributed lightweight ML models will be
designed & trained on data collected from IoT networks.
Objectives (Ob):
Ob1: Build a lightweight distributed machine learning model to capture the system
dynamics while addressing requirements like latency and privacy.
Ob2: Integrate ML algorithms with DTs for performance evaluation with continuous learning.
Ob3: Develop customised distributed models to fit the purpose of heterogeneous devices and match their requirements by integrating a heterogeneous set of IoT devices (acting as Edge devices) with varying computing power and with access to varied data modes (e.g., video, audio) with limitations in observability and data sharing restrictions.
Ob4: Develop Multi-modal data fusion and ML models to integrate the diverse data types from different sensors while being cognizant of their relationship with the ML model for minimized computing energy requirements.
Expected Results (R):
A set of distributed light-weight ML models to work in heterogeneous environments with
diverse edge devices.
R1. Develop models with constrained compute power and needs (e.g. latency, privacy.)
R2. Implement models in CCAM, enhancing real-time decision-making and safety.
R3. Develop multi-modal data fusion models with ML models to efficiently manage
constrained resources and their needs.
R4. Scenarios, performance metrics and best practice guidance for Connected and Cooperative Automated Mobility and future networks.
